Shabbat at Temple Israel

Shabbat is an opportunity to refresh your soul, connect with family and friends and reflect on your week. Temple Israel runs Erev Shabbat services in Green Point, Wynberg and West Coast every week. Morning services take place in either Green Point or Wynberg and a shiur takes place in West Coast once per month. The following are highlight shabbatot in our congregations.

Shabbat Chessed

Started in 2009 by a committed group of lay leaders who wanted an Erev Shabbat service to suit their needs, Shabbat Chessed is an inclusive and participatory service run once per month in Wynberg. The service is focussed on participatory music with various instruments featured and all children are welcome – in fact special activities are provided to them during the service. Each of these services is followed by a delicious brocha which is sponsored by members of the congregation.

Traditional Shabbat

A newcomer to our offering in Green Point, the Traditional service has also been set up by volunteers who wanted some additions to our normal services. It also features beautiful music with our musicians and service leaders, children’s activities (for 2 – 13-year-olds) and some delicious sushi afterwards.

West Coast Erev Shabbat

Because of the special nature of services at the West Coast at which the entire congregation gives full voice to the liturgy every single week, we say every week here is a highlight. The special West Coast ruach and community spirit is world famous and services are always followed by sponsored, tasty brochas.

Shabbat Mornings

In both Green Point and Wynberg, we have an inspiring and participatory service every week. We are also very proud to have at least three BMitzvah every month where the excellent training skills of our rabbis and teachers result in meaningful services. All morning services are followed by a brocha.

Online Services
Every single week, we have at least one of our services on Erev Shabbat as well as the Morning Service streamed live on Zoom and Facebook. This is also a feature of our festivals.
