Tyler Meyerowitz - Dvar Torah

Shalom. My Torah portion, Toldot, is about two brothers Jacob and Esau who had very different personalities (just like me and my brother Casey) and made very different choices in life.

The story focuses on two main things: the birthright and blessings. Their story teaches us about the choices we make and the values we carry with us.

A birthright isn’t just about getting material things like a Mastercraft or RX3. It’s about leadership, responsibility and continuing the important values of our ancestors. Now that I’m becoming a Bar Mitzvah, I’ve learned that I have to find my own voice and embrace who I am.

I’ve also realised that every choice I make, no matter how small can and will shape my future. I’m starting to understand that as I become an adult in the Jewish community I am responsible for my actions and have to think carefully about the choices I make and paths I take.

Just like Jacob inherited the blessings of our ancestors, I feel incredibly grateful for all the blessings I have in my life. I’m especially grateful for the values I have inherited from my parents: warmth, kindness, generosity and gratitude for my family and friends. Mom and Dad, thank you for always being there for me, even when I forget to put my plate in the dishwasher!

As I step into adulthood and become a Bar Mitzvah, I want to honour these blessings by living with purpose, kindness and gratitude. Just like Jacob carried forward the legacy of our ancestors I will do my best to carry forward the values and traditions that have been passed down to me.

I may not always be perfect, but I’ll always strive to make you proud. Today I take my place in the story of the Jewish people and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.

Thank you all for being here today to celebrate my barmi, and thank you to Rabbi Greg and Rachael for teaching and guiding me through this special journey.

Shabbat shalom
